in the rr tail light, this is the 4th light i've put in, after about a day or so, i get the brake light error in the dash, so pull that light out to see the glass is either cracked or broken. why?

The tail lights on my Nova would sometimes get moisture in them and it would make the bulbs explode. Its the only thing I've ever had happen to make the glass on the bulb break.
oh well that fully explains it then. thanks. the tail light does indeed get a lot of moisture in it, I didn't know that could cause bulbs to break
The bulbs heat up fairly fast, and when a cool bulb heats up the moisture on top of it, the change in temperature causes the thin glass to crack.

The gaskets in the tail lights don't work well. Water comes down the channels at the trunk lid and gets in that way. I use gutter tape (silver foil one side, adhesive on the other) to direct the water over the top of the light and down the outside. Haven't had a problem in 8 years. If you'll look at your tail lights, you'll probably see water pooled in their lower parts.
