    Rebuild or Buy new ones?

ok so I'm getting ready to do the LM rear brake upgrade and I started to gather parts. I bought some calipers at the JY that seemed to be in good condition. well I think i might have fucked up for not looking closely at them. I guess I was too excited that I actually found some. lol

anyway I started to take the calipers apart to clean them and rebuild them. Well I took out one of the pistons and it looked fine. i started to clean the cylinder and take the seals out. then I decided to take the other one out to take a look at it and noticed a lot of scratches on the piston. so now my question is...should i continue to rebuild them or should i just bite my ass and buy new ones from napa or autozone and turn these in as cores?

    here are some pics

It seems that some one must have rebuilt them before the car was junked because the seals and boots look ok...well the boots look a bit worn but the seals look fine. so that brings me to think that they didnt use air to take the pistons out and they used a screw driver or something else. BUT the other piston doesnt have those marks. anyway here are some pics

It also looks like they hammered this shit

SO WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK?

yeah they're kinda deep not surface scratches...looks like someone was putting pressure with a flat object and slipped a few times

Re: Rebuild or Buy new ones?

If the caliper itself is fine and only the piston is the issue, just order a new piston. It would probably be cheaper to get a new piston rather than a whole new caliper.

Been a while since I rebuilt calipers. Shop I first mechanic'ed at we rebuilt them all the time. Right piston is shot . The rust ridge and knicks will let fluid thru. As long as the bores are ok a standard size pistons would prolly make it.

These are from a Legend correct? You could try finding a website that supplies parts for Acura or check Advance Auto, Autozone, etc. I'm not sure on the year, so i cannot check the availability.

Only problem is that the piston is threaded in, so he would need to find a piston that threads in.

Re: Rebuild or Buy new ones?

Most of the Honda's rear brakes are like that.See if one of the other gens have the same bore size. Most of the front do from what I have seen. Rockauto seems to list rebuild kits. I would try NAPA as well.

I mean you could get new seal ,clean off the rust ridge, and try it. Its just a rear brake.

    Good Luck.

You usually can't find those aftermarket and acura wants like $41 for a rear piston... Did you guys know they used the same calipers on the vigor?

thats what i was thinking...they ARE just rear brakes. and when i was putting air into the piston to pop it out...no excess fluid came out through the boot. so that makes em think that they would work just fine. but the top of the piston worries me. for some reason i think that the pads would wear unevenly and maybe fuck up my rotors. and they're powerslot rotors...so i dont want that to happen lol. ill keep you guys updated

if the bores in the calipers are good, just do pistons and seals.
dont forget to clean the slide pins and grease the with an anti seize compound like copper slip or similar.
they may only do 30% of th work but its sumthing you gotta do for your own safety.
i dont like the looks of the pistons you have so i'd be replacing them myself.
do the both sides at once and when you can aford do the fronts as well.

I would go ahead and get new calipers, just to have the piece of mind. Are you doing the caliper upgrade or are you going for the 11"?
