i know they are fast... i never said they were weak cars... there just never going to girly look... the newest model is more agressive looking and is starting to step away from the girl car the older car was... im just not a fan of them.. i know there specs and i know what they can do i just dont care for them at all....

well im screwd... the motorcycle is a no go... my gf tried ot co-sign and they could only sell the bike if it was in her name fully... so there that goes...

now i guess im stuck rebuilding the accord... i am looking for a place to rebuild it and going to get a small loan from my bank i hope.... sigh

How far is work from your house? Is a bicycle an option? A decent used road bike is cheaper than just about anything else, and is just as fast as most mopeds.

Yeah, you need a motorcycle. That is unless you want to bulk way up on the way to work. A good 20 mile commute on bike would suck the first 20 times or so. Would also make a 15 minute commute into a 45 minute or more commute.

Sorry to hear about all this man, that really sucks.

Just a quick thought though - my car's trans was doing exactly what you describe when I bought the car. After yanking on the shifter for a while trying to get it to work right, I noticed that while the car would die out any time i let out the clutch with the trans in gear, the car would actually go forward when the shifter in neutral. When I found that out I drove it for about a quarter mile. As I pulled away from a stop sign the trans unstuck itself and it's been fine since. Might be worth checking it out a bit more to see if it's something like that before you resort to selling the car or dropping in a new tranny.

If I had any money to spend on a car, I'd buy it.

No joke. I'm not claiming it was one of my brighter moments (one of my stupidest actually) but I was lucky. I guess I should have clarified that I'm not suggesting you fix it in the way I accidentally did, I just meant it could possibly be fixed without having to do anything too serious!

Who did the clutch install? Did you do it or did a shop? You might want to check to see that they filled the trans back up.

And I'm betting bent shift fork on this one.

Check the tranny fluid man. Just take the fill bolt out, if fluid leaks out, the tranny is full. If it doesn't, then you are low on fluid. If the fluid does leak out, see what condition the fluid is in. It won't leak out a lot, so a small catch pan will be just fine.

    Re: Labeledsk8r's 89 LX-i coupe update thread

hold up a sec. why do you say the motor is done now too? Did the timing belt snap too?

do you have any friends with a car dolly, or know someone that could tow you to a parking lot or something? When you say you have no place to check this, I'm assuming that means you have to park on the street right?

A new tranny (if that's all that's wrong) is the cheapest option compared to a bike or moped, and still keeps you dry when it rains, and affords you some passenger/cargo room as opposed to your 2-wheeled options.

If you're willing to do the work yourself, we'll all help you out as much as possible. I know there's a few members here that live in FL too, and someone's gotta be somewhat close to you. Maybe they can assist as well.

What's your take? Sell it as a junk or figure out a way to get this beast back up and running?

    edit...
If you're interested in getting this thing up and running, either start up a thread in the mechanical section, or let me know and I'll hack up this thread and pull all the trouble explanations out and create a new thread with it for you.

I really hope you can get this car back on the road. Maybe you can get somebody in or around Ocala to let you use their yard or garage to get the work done.

no no the engine still runs fine... my only problem with riping the trans out and fixing it is this.. say i can get it all fixed for around 400-500 depending whats broken.... the car itself still wouldnt be "road safe" the ball joints and other bushings are so far shot that i can get the wheel to move almost half a foot in any direction,,, also the windows dont work as i have a bad window regulator , i also still have to pull that fuse every night so the car doesnt die and plug it in whenever i want to drive it... i want to fix it i do.. but i really am sick of the car... another reason im going moped is that i can cancle my car insurence (theres an extra 130 a month easy) plus gas saveings (gets 70 mpgs compaired to the accords 28 city) my current livieng situation is only temp when i moved back down to florida i was given a small place to stay for cheep so i could save up money to split an apartment with someone... well the deadline is november and i have ot get saveing.. cutting as many bills out of my buget right now is what ima have to do... it sucks... and it will suck every day i have to drive the damn thing...

right now what i want to do is get a small loan for the moped and pay it off so i can keep the accord and fix it later but i dont see that happening.. mayby i should sell it and try to find a better conditioned car later

I stayed out of this thread because it was depressing months ago. Today I was curious what the bumping was and dam... sk8er this is aweful.

Stop and think about this, you are not exactly rich now, what are you going to do if you find another car in your budget range and it needs suspension work, ac, and some of the same things wrong with this one. Even a car ten years newer could need the same things.
sounds to me like you could fix the tranny if you could get it up to Vanilla's for a work meet, and stick with it.
I know this isn't helping, I wish you better luck on cars.

    Re: Labeledsk8r's 89 LX-i coupe update thread

ok, so knowing all else that's wrong still doesn't tell me this is a bad deal to fix. Moped will be old and useless the first time it rains. Although it's a great 'nice day' transportation option that gets insanely good gas mileage, it's not the best option in the world.

That estimate of 400-500 should cover not only the tranny and cheap clutch (if you do in fact need a new clutch), but should take care of the full front suspension ball-joint replacement.

Something like this would suffice for a full front-end service. As for that damn fuse, now that I'm hearing about a bad window regulator, I might wager a guess that there may be a short in that which could be partial, if not all, cause of your fuse issue.
