    My 1985 1.8 EX Automatic

    Hello all,

I was doing some research the other day about Honda Accords, with a view to buying one of my own, and I happened to come across this forum. There is certainly a great breadth of knowledge on this site, and it made up my mind to buy an Accord that I had been watching on Ebay.

And here it is - fewer than 33000 miles, everything working (*touches wood*), and one very happy owner indeed! I do need to change the tyres at some point, however. They're the original, 23 year old ones and a bit past their prime!

    All the best,
    John.

P.S. - Haven't really given it a proper clean yet - should look even better soon!

I haven't got an engine pic yet, but that's a good idea - I'll take one tomorrow, if it isn't raining!

Damn man that is NICE! Really rare over there in the UK I hear. Everything is stock and perfect on that thing! Don't change a thing! Kinda funny to see a manual choke though up to 85. Did you have the ET1 or EZ engine in that?

beautiful car! was it in a time capsule?
excuse my ignorance, but i thought you brits measured distance in kilometers, not miles. just curious about that...

Ha ha! Advice noted. Don't you guys say 'touch wood' for luck? Anyway, thanks for the welcome, everyone.

Lil Mike, you are correct that it is a an ET1 engine - is that important?

Evil88accordLX, we measure distance in miles, just like you guys. I think the EU would rather we'd switch to km like the rest of Europe, but we've always been the naughty child at the back of the class, EU wise, so thankfully that's not going to happen. And, no, it wasn't in a time capsule! It was in a garage in Bolton-le-Sands about three miles from where I live. It was owned my an elderly gentleman from new and he had it serviced at his local Honda dealer until June, when he decided he wanted a smaller car. So he traded it in, and it found its way to me.

2ndGenGuy, I'm with you on keeping it standard. They're such a rare car over here that it would be a crime to change anything.

Could I ask a question as well? I've only just arrived and already I'm asking questions!

Is the radio of a standard size, or is it unique to the Accord? I was thinking that if and when the original radio gives up the ghost, I might perhaps put in a CD player. Is that possible?

Here are the engine pics, as promised. Not really clean, but not bad for a 23 year old. Taken with my phone, so not fantastic quality - sorry!

Re: My 1985 1.8 EX Automatic

Wow, thats a nice example indeed and a bargain price to boot.

I had it in my watch list last week just to see what it would do, I too have the identical model but mine is in blue metallic. I bought mine 2 years ago with 37k miles on the clock & now its over 41k so I'm restricting its use so I don't pile on too many more miles! Maybe you'll need to employ tactics to keep it such a low mileage..!

Yours is way nicer than mine as the previous owner of mine lived in London & the car is pretty much battle scarred - although there is little rust to speak of... but there is some

I'd suggest keeping yours garaged if it isn't already as they have a propensity to rust and to employ as much preservation as you can... I recommend the products from www.bilthamber.com as they are good value & seem to do what they say on the tin.

I note that your rear number plate must have been renewed at some point... in that it has the new smaller type lettering. Wonder what happened to the original number plate? One of my other Accords has the new style plates on which I need to urgently address before the new laws come in which will outlaw non-compliant number plates - ie. non current - in the UK on the 1st November.

Good luck with your new car & welcome to this ever growing band of this forum

It is improbable that the original radio will ever fail. You now drive a Honda!

A normal CD player will fit the space but I trial fitted one to my '82 and found it a slightly 'loose' fit. One could easily be made to fit securely I'm sure. I decided to refit a standard radio, though an FM version from a '84 Accord, for retro-ness.

The radio wiring is unique to JDM - Japanese dealer market - Honda's I think. I got an adaptor from the US - ebay - but it doesn't fit & I'm not prepared to butcher the present wiring so I'll stick with stock for now.

I've got an aftermarket deck in mine. You need to get the little wireframe "basket" that clips into the dash. Then any DIN sized deck should go in standard. But behind the deck, the wiring is REALLY tight. You have to really be careful routing the wires and tucking them so that the deck will go all the way back.

Re: My 1985 1.8 EX Automatic

Accord83, it is from near you. Very near, in fact - I also live in Lancaster! How uncanny... Thanks also for the link to the thread on OldJapaneseCar.com.

Denhonda, it was garaged previously but, unfortunately, I don't have one that I can use myself. I'm just going to have to take great care of the bodywork. The original owner had it waxoiled fairly regularly, so I'm going to keep that up. I also plan to wax the paintwork fairly often.

That's interesting about the number plate - I hadn't noticed! Does that mean I'll have to change the front one as well? It's a pity it doesn't have the original. It probably used to have the Ribble Valley Honda logo on it! Still, the tax disk holder and the sticker in the rear window are still there.

Thanks Denhonda and 2ndGenGuy about the radio info. The cassette player is very fuzzy, which is why I asked. You can't really hear anything, but I'm going to have a go with a cassette head cleaner and see if that makes any difference.

Thanks for the welcome, guys. It's nice to be here!

    John.

P.S. - Does anyone know where is a good place to get parts in the UK?
